Top 10 foods high in magnesium

Magnesium is a very important mineral – in our bodies there is only one other mineral, potassium, that is as prevalent in our cells.  It’s used in hundreds of processes in the body from energy production to bone formation to detoxification and muscle relaxation.  It’s also used to make adrenaline so if you’re having a stressful day – you’re going to use a lot more of it.  Magnesium can also help keep your digestive transit working well – some laxative drugs use magnesium compounds and that old fashioned remedy epsom salts, is also a magnesium based compound

Research suggests that over 70% of women don’t get enough magnesium in their diet, and even if you eat the right foods that are a couple of factors that may confound you getting enough.  One is that when whole foods that contain magnesium are processed and refined the mineral content reduces, and the second is that other minerals such as calcium and phosphorous affect how much magnesium we absorb from food.

So how can you make sure you are giving yourself the best chance of getting enough magnesium? This list can help you identify the foods where you should get the most magnesium.  We include a number of these in Nutribox snacks – for example dark chocolate, dried fruits and nuts and seeds – so hopefully our healthy snacks can help you get the magnesium you need every day.
